My Journey through Breast Cancer

On October 11, 2013, I was diagnosed with Stage II Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) ... or as we like to call it, extreme measures for a nap (EMFN). For a while, this blog will be my cancer journal. Enter at your own risk.

Maddie's Birthday

On Saturday we drove down to San Diego to help my brother and sister-in-law celebrate my niece Madeleine's first birthday. Julie had come up with a whole carnival theme, complete with hot dogs, popcorn and strings of triangle flags. If it hadn't been what will arguably be the hottest day of 2009 (it was 106 in La Mesa), the party would have lasted long into the night. Here are a few pics from the day ...

Amber and Josie, both dressed up for the party.

There were a lot of little kids celebrating with us, and with the heat scorching as it was, some of the dads ran to a nearby store and got a blow-up pool for the kids to play and cool off in. This is the back of Maddie.

Maddie and her birthday "cake."

Not sure she likes the organic cake and avocado icing ... but her diabetic dad is trying to save her from sugar for as long as possible.

Her adoring fans.

Amy handed out gifts. She also made the sign above, which says "Happy Birthday" in carnival flags.

Maddie, consumed by her presents.

Jaime with an oh-so-excited-to-be-here Josephine.

Jon and Julie helping Maddie open her gift from her Grandma Brown. She made puppets for the theater Jon built her (which can be seen in the background).

I think she likes 'em.

Jon reading Madeleine "The Hungry Caterpillar." I love seeing the dad my brother has become.
