My Journey through Breast Cancer

On October 11, 2013, I was diagnosed with Stage II Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) ... or as we like to call it, extreme measures for a nap (EMFN). For a while, this blog will be my cancer journal. Enter at your own risk.

Maddie's Birthday

On Saturday we drove down to San Diego to help my brother and sister-in-law celebrate my niece Madeleine's first birthday. Julie had come up with a whole carnival theme, complete with hot dogs, popcorn and strings of triangle flags. If it hadn't been what will arguably be the hottest day of 2009 (it was 106 in La Mesa), the party would have lasted long into the night. Here are a few pics from the day ...

Amber and Josie, both dressed up for the party.

There were a lot of little kids celebrating with us, and with the heat scorching as it was, some of the dads ran to a nearby store and got a blow-up pool for the kids to play and cool off in. This is the back of Maddie.

Maddie and her birthday "cake."

Not sure she likes the organic cake and avocado icing ... but her diabetic dad is trying to save her from sugar for as long as possible.

Her adoring fans.

Amy handed out gifts. She also made the sign above, which says "Happy Birthday" in carnival flags.

Maddie, consumed by her presents.

Jaime with an oh-so-excited-to-be-here Josephine.

Jon and Julie helping Maddie open her gift from her Grandma Brown. She made puppets for the theater Jon built her (which can be seen in the background).

I think she likes 'em.

Jon reading Madeleine "The Hungry Caterpillar." I love seeing the dad my brother has become.

this and that

My friend Chrissy visited the other day, and got to meet Josie for the first time. Chrissy is one of my dearest friends. We served together for several years in East Asia. Just 8 months ago she moved back to Southern California (even though her family is in St. Louis), and we're having a chance to reconnect. Aren't dear old friends the best?

Not long ago Chrissy learned how to crochet, and she crocheted these little booties for Josie. So cute!

Caleb's sister-in-law Christie has QUITE the green thumb, and grew these squashes herself! I am always impressed by how her vegetable garden flourishes. She's grown so many that she can hardly give enough away. Aren't they pretty? I don't know what I'm going to do with them yet ... but I'm inclined just to shellac 'em and use them as table decor.

After two months being too tired to do much more than watch TV in my free time, I'm finally knitting again! I've started this project for Josie, a duffle coat. This is as far as I've gotten. I still have to finish the hood and knit the sleeves. I'll post finished pics when I have them!

Josie is getting too long to sleep comfortably in the swing completely swaddled ... so now I wrap her up with her feet sticking out. She has the cutest feet of anyone I know!

important lesson learned on vacation

- Hotel soap (specifically from the Vagabond Inn in Bishop, CA) is quite useful in getting poop out of baby clothes.

Josie's first road trip

My parents-in-law drove Caleb, Josie and I on a five-day trip up to Reno, Nevada. Our main reason for going was to visit Caleb's grandmother, who turns 90 in December. She was thrilled to see us, and especially to meet great-granddaughter number 12. We also got to do a bit of sight-seeing up and down Highway 395, as well as stay in historic Virginia City in Nevada. Here's a few pictures from the trip.

On our drive up, we stopped at a park in Bishop for lunch. Josie had a much-needed reprieve from the car seat.

Josephine was a pretty good traveler. She spent a LOT of time in that car seat, and only really lost it once.

Grandma Fate (Caleb's mom's mom) with her great-granddaughter. They're just 89 1/2 years apart in age. Grandma was thrilled to get to meet her.

Me and Caleb in Virginia City. Its a preserved old Western town, complete with regular shoot outs, guys dressed in cowboy gear and enough saloons to quench the thirst of the entire state. We had a nice day wandering around town and enjoying the local fare. Caleb's aunt and uncle live just outside town, up in the mountains, and we got to stay with them. Its a beautiful setting.

Relaxing in the hotel in Bishop on our way home. We'd left Virginia City around 9:00 a.m., met more of Caleb's extended family at Lake Topaz for a while (Caleb even did a little water skiing), and then headed to Bishop. We tried to see Bodie and Mono Lake on the way, but arrived at both spots after they'd closed.

Caleb and Josie in Bishop. We'd just visited the Galen Rowell gallery. He was a prominent photographer of the High Sierras and other iconic California scenery.

signs i've been watching too much tv

Agents Dinozo, Gibbs and David, from NCIS, are showing up as friends in my dreams

I see the same episode of CSI twice in one day

I watch movies edited for tv, even though I own the same movie, commercial free

I'm actually considering buying the 4-disc set "Monster Ballads"

I can't get the song from the new Baskin Robbins commercial out of my head ("Ice cream and cake! Ice cream and cake!") and I can sing all the words to the "Mini Sirloin Burgers" Jack-In-The-Box commercial

I'm thinking of renting the Miley Cyrus movie, just out on DVD!

2 months old

Josephine is 2 months old! Here are her current stats:

Weight: 10 lb. 10 oz. (45th percentile)
Height: 22 1/2 inches (50th percentile)
Head Circumference: 40 cm (75th percentile)

Hobbies:

Waiting for a new diaper before finally pooping
Smiling at Mom and Dad
Getting regular tours of the house to look at the surroundings (we are no longer content just to sit in the same spot for too long ... there's too much to see elsewhere!)

Favorite spot in the house:

The changing table, which sits in the closet underneath her hanging clothes, which seem to have a better sense of humor than Mom and Dad

girls day out

Yesterday my mom, my cousin Amy Beth, Josie and I took a short trip out to Monrovia to visit my cousin Molly and her new baby Vienna. My cousin Rachel and her 8-month-old Sophia were also there. We all had a great time catching up, and mostly meeting Vienna. She is the same size Josie was when she was born ... and already I can't believe Josie was ever that small! Molly had a somewhat tumultuous pregnancy, requiring lots of bed rest and doctor's appointments every two days. And even when she was born she was kept in the NICU for two days before Molly could even hold or nurse her. However, everyone is home now, and everyone is healthy! And Vienna is just as precious as any newborn ever was. Here's a few pictures from our day. (Make sure to play the short video at the bottom, too ... I think Sophie and Josie are going to be great friends.)

Sophie just thought Josephine was the greatest thing since plastic keys. You have to listen hard for her laugh through all the adults talking and laughing at her ... apparently Josie is really funny.

at odds with myself

I am generally a compliant person, a rule-follower, a go-with-the-flow kind of person. However, I also have this annoying tendency to not want to do what everyone says I should. For instance, I don't believe in global warming, that vitamins really make that much difference, that anything but actual dieting can cause weight loss, or that the stimulus package will make much difference in my everyday life. I don't like to swim with the crowd unless I've done the research to know that the crowd is swimming in the right direction.

And so, this dichotomy in my personality is making motherhood a bit of a challenge at times. On the one hand, surprising even me, I find myself fairly confident in my own instincts. I have an excellent example in my own mother, who has always been fairly relaxed and non-panicky, and so don't find myself too uncomfortable just making decisions about what my baby might or might not need. However, there is a lot I don't know about babies ... like how much sleep they might need and when they need it, which is my current area of study. I'll be going back to work in 5 1/2 weeks and I'm anxious not only for Josie to be on a fairly regular routine, but sleeping longer at night. Right now she vacillates between going 4 hours and 8 hours between feedings ... but every night is a kind of crap shoot about just how long she'll go. The ambiguity is starting to drive me crazy.

So I borrowed a book. Books on babies tend to ruffle my "I can do it myself" tendencies. Everyone has their list of must-reads ... which of course keeps me from wanting to read any of them. However, I value research highly. I'm willing to admit that I don't already know everything, and that the answers I need might be found in a book. The crazy thing about books on babies is the sheer volume of information out there. And what's more, information from book to book often varies greatly, and contradictions abound. There are countless theories and studies about parenthood, each backed by doctors with training and moms with experience. If I were to read everything out there, with no confidence in my own instincts and innate ability to parent, I would wind up so confused I'd be convinced there is no way to do things right. Even this book on sleeping, written by ONE author, contradicts itself!

So what's a girl to do? Well, on some levels, I'm not really sure. I've read only two books so far, one on helping get your baby on a schedule, the other on helping your baby sleep well. And true to baby book form, they contradict each other. You can't follow one theory without shirking the other. Do I let Josephine cry herself to sleep? How many naps does she need? And what if she sleeps through the next feeding time? One book tells me to NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY, while the other one says, Go ahead and wake her if she sleeps through feeding time.

I guess this is where instinct must play a part. Not only that, but none of these authors and experts know MY baby. And no two babies are the same, right? Perhaps I'm just a little impatient to get her figured out and on a schedule. Especially this morning, as last night I didn't get more than 2 1/2 hours of sleep at a time.

All that to say ... I'm still trying to figure out this baby thing. I'm willing to admit there are things I don't know, but I also firmly believe that my instincts are serving us well. I guess the challenge is finding the balance between the two ... hoping that somewhere in there lies the solution to getting Josephine sleeping consistently at night.

8 weeks

Baby Josephine is eight weeks old today. Crazy how fast time is already flying. My baby is a few days from two months old, and in just six more weeks I'll be back at work. Before we know it she'll be walking, running, driving ... it'll be Christmas, and then 2010. I'm certainly enjoying having the summer to spend with my baby and reorient myself to our new world order. Hopefully by the time I'm back at work, we'll have settled into a routine. Here are a few updated baby pics.

Josie lounging in Daddy's arms ... and ready to duke it out with anyone who disturbs her.

Sound asleep in the swing.

Ah, so classy.

Looking a little suspicious ...
